The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
